The Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) seeks to incorporate Afro-Asian approaches into its agenda items by reflecting the historical experiences, developmental priorities, and legal perspectives of Asian and African States. In its deliberations, AALCO emphasizes principles such as multilateralism, sovereign equality, sustainable development, peaceful settlement of disputes, and respect for cultural and legal diversity in the understanding and practical application of international law. Through Inter-Sessional Meetings, Working Groups, and Secretariat studies, the Organization provides a platform for member States to articulate common positions on existing and emerging issues of international law, including climate change, investment law, the law of the sea, international law in cyberspace and transnational criminal law cooperation among others. AALCO also attempts to broaden international law perspectives by encouraging consensus-based dialogue and capacity building among Asian-African countries. Its work often highlights the need for a more inclusive and representative international legal order that accommodates the concerns and aspirations of Afro-Asian States within the evolution and codification of international law.
