AALCO Legal Advisers Meeting held in New York on 28 and 30 October 2019

AALCO’s Annual Legal Advisers Meeting was held in New York on 28 and 30 October 2019. 

On 28 October, 2019, Secretary-General Prof. Dr. Kennedy Gastorn attended the “Dialogue with ICJ Judges on the Court’s Provisional measures of Protection”. 3 Judges from the Court participated in the forum. Judge Abdulqawi Yusuf, President spoke on the topic “Identification of the Rights to be protected”; Judge Antonio Augusto Cancado Trindade spoke on the topic “The Autonomous Legal regime”. Judge Julia Sebutinde along with the other two judges participated in an exchange of views. 

On 30 October, 2019, another meeting was convened on the topic “The effects of changing baselines: A threat to maritime legal order” wherein informative speeches were delivered by Ms. Patricia Galvao-Teles and Mr.Juan Ruda Santolaria (Co-Chairs ILC Study Group) on the topic “Issues of Statehood and relocation”; Ms. Daphne Hong (Legal Adviser, Singapore) on the topic “Boundaries and Delimitation” and Prof. Rene Lefeber (Legal Adviser, Netherlands) on the “Maritime Treaties and Judgements”. 

Secretary- General, Prof. Dr.Kennedy Gastorn also attended the International Law Week during the 74th meeting of the UNGA where a number of contemporary issues in international law were discussed. 

Dr. Roy S. Lee, AALCO’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations convened all of the above meetings.
