Capacity-Building Initiatives: Webinars and Seminars

As part of its mandate to serve as an advisory body on public international law and to promote legal cooperation in Asia and Africa, the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) places strong emphasis on capacity-building through the organisation of webinars and seminars. These initiatives are designed to enhance technical expertise, facilitate knowledge exchange, and strengthen institutional capacities across diverse areas of international law. In contrast to standardised models often adopted in other multilateral settings, AALCO’s approach to capacity-building is tailored to the specific legal, developmental, and institutional contexts of its Member States, reflecting its unique composition and consultative character.

AALCO’s webinars provide accessible and timely platforms for engagement on emerging and contemporary legal issues. They bring together experts from academia, international organisations, and government institutions to deliberate on topics within AALCO’s work programme that are of interest to Member States such as topics within the International Law Commission’s current areas of work, international humanitarian law and environmental law. By leveraging virtual formats, these webinars enable broader participation and inclusivity across geographically diverse regions.

Complementing these efforts, AALCO’s in-person and hybrid seminars offer more in-depth and interactive engagement. These seminars often focus on specialised themes and provide opportunities for focused discussions, practical training, and peer-to-peer exchange among legal practitioners, policymakers, and scholars. They also serve as important platforms for fostering dialogue between Member States and for identifying shared legal challenges and priorities.

Through these capacity-building activities, AALCO contributes to strengthening legal expertise and promoting informed participation in international legal processes. They further reinforce AALCO’s role as a forum for constructive dialogue and cooperation, grounded in the shared experiences and perspectives of Asian and African States.
