Responsibilities

 The Director for Legal Affairs supervises, leads and manages the work of the legal team in collaboration with the management of the AALCO Secretariat. The Director also:

•   Monitors and analyses new developments in international law as related to the work and agenda of the AALCO, performs extensive legal research and analysis and prepares legal opinions, studies, briefs, reports, and correspondence;

•   Provides advice to the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretaries-General on diverse substantive and procedural questions related to the work of the AALCO;

•  Provides legal opinion in one or more areas of concentration, and independently handles a wide range of multi-discipline legal matters involving issues of international law. Specific knowledge in one or more areas of international law including the law of international organizations, law of dispute settlement, law of treaties, and international trade law is a privilege.

•  Leads the legal team in organizing diplomatic conferences, working groups, expert groups, training courses and other initiatives, including preparation of background materials, summaries of issues and views of delegations, meeting reports, etc.;

•   Assists the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretaries-General in the design of programme activities and project management with respect to the legal matters on the agenda of the AALCO;

•   Performs other duties as assigned by the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretaries-General.

 

Competencies

Integrity, professionalism, strong analytical skills and a sense of teamwork are necessary. The Director for Legal Affairs is also expected to have an in-depth knowledge of public international law and strong analytical skills and the ability to conduct comprehensive legal research on a wide range of issues related to the agenda of the AALCO, proficiency in legal drafting and editing, and the ability to work to tight deadlines and handle multiple concurrent projects. 

Prior work experience in legal matters, including legal analysis, research and writing related to international law issues and/or teaching public international law at universities or academic institutions is a privilege.

 

Education

The candidate must have at least a Master’s Degree in International Law or related fields. Specialization in any field of public international law is a privilege. Academic publications including books and articles on international law issues related to Asia and Africa are a value.

 

Work Experience

A minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of international law, preferably in an international organization or as a Professor of International Law in reputed National or International University.

Preference will be given to candidates having practical experience in international law especially those having work experience in an international organization. Experience in professional legal work relating to procedural and institutional issues is also desirable.

 

Language Skills

Fluency in English (both oral and written) and legal drafting is required. Knowledge of Arabic and French will be a privilege.
